Welcome to the Meritage Ensemble

By Michael Buss, 2016-09-27

We are very excited to welcome  Grace Lee of the Meritáge Vocal Ensemble as a member of the Arts Council.

Many say that the human singing voice is the greatest musical instrument of all. Put 50 of them together into a fine choir and you have rich and emotional music. Maybe I’m just biased because I have sung in so many choirs in the past.

The Meritáge Vocal Ensemble (Meritáge for short) has been in Anaheim for a number of years but somehow we have not connected until now. The name Meritáge is a  play on the vintner’s term meritáge which refers to the blending  of fine wines – hence, in musical terms, the blending of fine voices with a diverse mixture of repertoire and styles.

Meritáge evolved out of the Cypress Camerata, a chamber choir founded by Dr. Sheridan Ball in 1984. In the broader spectrum of this 32 year evolution this ensemblehas performed at innumerable Southern California venues, has been featured at several state and regional conventions of the Choral Conductors Guild, and performed for a variety of music organizations including the American Choral Directors Association, The Symphonians of the Music Center and the Los Angeles Da Camera Society

Reconstituted as a professional ensemble in 2007, Meritáge continues to present local concerts, participates in regional music festivals and serves as the firm foundation for the Southern California Master Chorale's large choral-orchestral performances. This larger "symphonic" chorus has performed frequently with the Long Beach Symphony, Golden State Pops Orchestra and the Marina del Rey Summer Symphony.

Under the artistic direction of Dr. Christian Grases the choir performs four concerts in the season – the next being on October 22nd at the Anaheim United Methodist Church.  Dr. Grase is an accomplished author and composer, in addition to being a skilled conductor.

Accompanist Porfirio Antonio Mojica is a professional pianist absorbed  in the harmonious genres of Gregorian Chant, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary, and Gospel, to name a few.

The ensemble rehearses on Tuesday evenings at AUMC. They are always on the lookout for new singers, especially male voices. Applicants will need to audition to qualify.
