Editor's Pick - What To See Over The Holidays

ANAHEIM is not short of great live shows but you have to know what’s on and where to go. Here are performances and exhibitions from our own member organizations that we can heartily recommend. Most performances require you reserve seats in good time or you’ll be disappointed.

The Stage Door Repertory Theatre is the new venue in town – not yet a year old – but already playing to very full houses.

Heaven Cent: Miracles on Christmas Eve when the divine intervention of a well-intentioned but hapless Angel brings a homeless teenage girl and a missionary priest to the same place at the same time. Opens November 24th. $20-$23. Full details here.

Holiday Voices: presented by New Voices Playwrights Theatre in the same Theatre. For the last 15 years this group of talented OC Playwrights has produced a show of short plays during the Holidays. Holiday Voices consist of 7 short plays – one of them written and directed by Anaheim Arts Council’s own Michael Buss! All shows begin at 2pm; December 1, 8, 9 and 15th. Full details.

The Chance Theatre, now well established as the award winning off-Broadway playhouse of Orange County, located just off the 91, at Imperial.

Little Women – the Broadway Musical: Wonderful entertainment for all the family. Runs November 16 to December 23rd. Details here.

The Eight: Reindeer Monologues: An annual tradition of bawdy and hilarious soliloquies for the broadminded! Running November 26th to December 22nd. Details here.

Creative Identity will present its annual client Winter Concert. Their clients who have intellectual and developmental disabilities will present a concert featuring a variety of performance arts including solo, duet, and choir pieces, and instrumental and dance pieces. Expect to have your heart touched! December 8th at 6pm. Full details.

The Orange County Symphony has established its own a tradition with its fine Holiday Celebration. This year the concert will be at the First Christian Church and will include the Christmas selection from Handel’s Messiah, and special guests - the Claremont Concert Choir. Many other treats and surprises. David Rentz conducts. Sunday December 9th. 5pm Silent Auction. 6pm pre-concert discussion. 6:30 Concert. Prior booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. The Anaheim Ballet.

No holiday season would be complete without the Nutcracker Ballet. The AB’s production with the Symphony Irvine at the City National Grove of Anaheim will draw huge crowds and delight children and seniors alike. If you’ve never been to the ballet before, now would be a great time to start. Come and follow Clara’s adventures and dreams with the Nutcracker soldier, set to the glorious music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Saturday December 15th at 2pm and 7pm. Advance booking recommended. Anaheim Art Association opens an Art Exhibition at the Downtown Community Center on December 4th – running right though to January 31st. This group of local artists produces quite stunning works that well deserve a visit. The exhibition of free, open daily from 8am to 9pm.

The Muzeo. The Spanish Masters Exhibition – Goya, Picasso and Dali, is now open. General admission is only $10, with concessions for children and group rates. This is a gorgeous display that captures a world of art with which many may be unfamiliar. The Muzeo is a lovely facility in which to wander and soak in atmosphere and art history; then take time to visit the great new shops and cafés in the Center Street Promenade. Muzeo details here.
