Blues Camp for Anaheim Kids
Darryn Azevedo (keyboard), Braden Walker
(guitar), Matt Fyke (drums).
It takes a very special determination to get some events off the ground. And if Sherry Azevedo and her team are successful Anaheim’s first ever Blues Kids Camp will be held at Loara High School, Anaheim, from June 25th through June 27th, from 8 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., culminating with a concert on Wednesday, June 27th.
And who are the kids likely to attend? Anybody 12-18 years with a hankering to be there. It helps to bring your own instruments, but we can tell you that some of the larger instruments – like drums, or wind instruments, will be provided.

Those wishing to attend the Blues Camp in Anaheim need to audition. Audition songs can be found on blueskids.com. Auditions can be done in two ways i.e., Come to the Fender Center in Corona on May 12th between 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon or email their audition piece via a youtube link to firstname.lastname@example.org. The Camp will accommodate no more than 30 kids.
The main tutor will be world famous Fernando Jones himself. This no smoking, no drinking, fast talking and very funny bluesman has been an inspiration to thousands already.
In early March Mrs. Azevedo spoke at a City Council after some of the local blues kids had performed. In her own words:
“I am a proud Blues Kids' parent whose son, Darryn, had the opportunity to participate in two camps last summer My son was one of 32 kids, mostly from Southern California, but also from Arizona and as far as New Jersey, who participated in the week-long camp in Corona. Following this camp nine of them, (including the three musicians who played in the Council meeting), received scholarships from the Blues Foundation to also participate in the week-long camp in Chicago. There they got to play with 90 other talented student musicians from all over the United States. The experience was exhilarating and some kids like mine who did not know much about Blues music, are not only singing the blues now but can also tell you about some of the great Blues musicians like Otis Redding, Etta James and BB King!

“Founded by renowned Bluesman, educator, songwriter and scholar Fernando Jones, the Blues Kids Foundation is a non-profit organization established for America’s youth and educators to preserve, promote and perform the Blues. Mr. Jones is also the Blues Ensemble Director at Columbia College in Chicago. Under the tutelage of Blues musicians, Fernando Jones’ Blues Camp is currently held in Chicago, Austin and Corona and this summer in Anaheim.
“Mr. Jones offers the Blues Camp experience free-of-cost because he wants to introduce young musicians to a major part of America's musical journey. The Blues Kids Foundation provides scholarships for over 120 Blues Kids interested in studying and playing the Blues. Each scholarship costs between $1,000 to $1,500. Yes, that's right Blues Camp offered by Fernando Jones is free and we like to call it "priceless".
